The Importance Of Caring For Your Pond Water Plants

Maintaining the eco-balance of your pond -beautifully

Not only do aquatic plants enhance the beauty of your pond, but they also play an important role in maintaining the eco-balance of the pond by keeping it clean and clear of algae and toxins that can harm fish and wildlife. An overgrown pond can look untidy though, so make sure you keep on top of your plants and remove any foliage that is leaning or deteriorating into your pond, as this contributes to algae. Perfect Ponds have years of experience in pond plant care and pruning and will make sure your pond looks great all year round.

Using Plants To Control Algae

  • Plants absorb and consume nutrients and blocks sunlight to create shade which keeps water temperature down, which could otherwise promote the growth of algae, and green water.
  • Plants filter water naturally by trapping sediment, reducing nutrients, nitrates and phosphates, and breaking down toxic compounds and pathogens to combat algae growth.
  • Plants supply oxygen (a by-product of photosynthesis) to your pond as well by keeping water temperatures down (and oxygen in) through shading your pond from direct sun.
  • Floating plants also provide shelter for fish from predators, from heat in the summer, the cold in winter and provide natural material on which a variety of pond inhabitants might spawn.
  • Water plants are extremely beneficial for fish and other wildlife because they produce more oxygen in the water as a by-product of photosynthesis, which help your fish breathe.

Balance In Your Water Garden

Water plants with deep root systems trap harmful toxic compounds and carbon dioxide before breaking down these pathogens and excess nutrients to release oxygen back into the pond. Aquatic plants that have high nutrient uptake will be extremely helpful to clear up your pond. Use floating and submerged plants in combination to produce oxygen while limiting the development of algae. Aquatic plants that float on the surface provide coverage and areas for the good bacteria to grow.

Choosing Plants For Your Pond

Plants offer a simple, natural solution to boosting pond health and enhancing its beauty. It’s important that your pond has a good balance of plants offering a variety of flower colour and foliage at different times of the year, both for your pleasure, and for a successful pond ecosystem. Consideration should also be given to height, spread and depth of water they prefer when choosing plants.  Pond plants are categorised as submerged plants, marginal or bog plants, floating plants, and deep water emergent plants.

Submerged Plants

Submerged plants grow completely underwater. They provide a great place for fish to hide from predators. Often referred to as “oxygenating” plants, they are very efficient at pulling carbon dioxide from the water and releasing beneficial oxygen after photosynthesis. Oxygenating plants do not require fertilising; they use the excess nutrients already present in your pond water.

Marginal Or Bog Plants

Marginal and bog plants are aquatic and semi-aquatic species that grow well in shallow water or saturated soil around pond edges. They improve water quality by providing natural filtration through extracting and breaking down excess nutrients, toxic nitrates and other waste products from the pond environment before they can accumulate.

Deep Water Emergent Plants

Some of the most well-known and recognisable pond plants come from this group, which includes Water Lilies. Deep water emergent plant roots grow deep underwater in planters on the pond bottom. Leaves and flowers emerge and spread appearing to float upon the surface, providing fish and other inhabitants with shade and cover from predators.

Floating Plants

Floating plants that simply sit on the surface of the water provide oxygen. Floating plants use nutrients from the water, competing with algae to improve water clarity by absorbing excess carbon monoxide that would cloud the water. Their roots drift below the surface and act as filters. Rapid growers, they provide surface cover, shade, and hiding places for fish making them extremely important in keeping a healthy water garden.
